Chapter 9
Fireball Escape
After running through the wall, Hue and everyone else finds themselves in another room. This room is fairly wide, and is covered with volcanic rock from the walls to the ceiling. The platform upon which everyone walks is six by six steel flooring, with a design of a flame in the middle of it that looks like someone drew it out.
“So, Uncle Leo, what does this room have in store for us,” asks Artie.
“Well, this place was built to withstand heat, which is why it’s made out of volcanic rocks. Other than this platform and the walkway that you see in front of you, there is no other place in this room to walk on. If you were to fall off this platform, it would be like falling in space. You’d fall forever,” says Professor Leo as he lies flat on his stomach, and reaches over the side of the platform to search for something. His hand eventually touches what he is looking for. It is a brown button that he presses which causes two large canoes to spring up from the platform on the northern side.
The canoes are large enough to fit twelve people which is fortunate for everyone since they total eleven. Dr. Connor is a fairly large person and easily makes up for the missing twelfth person.
Professor Leo stands to his feet and walks over to the canoes, kneeling down at the rear end of the first one. He pushes another brown button which causes both the canoes to turn around simultaneously, so that they are sitting at the start of the walkway; one behind the other.
“It’s time to board the canoes everyone. There is no time for an explanation. We should hurry up and evacuate this area to get a head start against the fireballs,” says Professor Leo. Upon hearing the word fireballs, everyone gives him a sharp look.
“Well, from the looks on all of your faces, I guess I have to explain the situation we’re in now, too. So, here it is. If you look above you, you’ll notice that there are eight pipes, with holes at the end of each pipe. They are all facing the center of the space right above us. That is what your eyes can see. Now! What your eyes can’t see is that there are flamethrowers within each pipe. Secondly, right above your heads there is an invisible gas machine, designed to keep gas built up in an enclosed area. To accomplish this, the machine is designed to produce a barrier that helps to keep the gas in one place. So, when the pipes shoot out the flames, they are directed at the machine. The barrier surrounding the machine helps to keep the fire and the gas in one place. Then when the fire and the gas form a huge ball of fire, the machine releases the barrier and the fireball is let loose in one of two directions. Either it will go down the bottomless pit
